EXAMPLES OF RESTORATION WORK IN CREEK BY BIG HANK CAMPGROUND
Along the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River, Idaho

In 1996 and 1997 stream improvements were made in the creek along the south side of Big Hank campground. In June 2004 Matt Davis, USFS, took us down there so we could appreciate how some of the improvements intended for Brett Creek would work. When you are in the area take some time off and look at these structures. Most photos by Bob Bates others by Frank Faha are noted.

Forest Service people found that culverts, even large ones, block the passage of fish. This arrangement of flat stones is an attempt to eliminate culverts. To date this design appears to be successful. Photo by Frank Faha

The V structure directs the water flow so it digs a respectable hole. It is easy to see the shallow water above the logs and the deep hole below it. Deep water gives the fish some protection while the gravel moved downstream a little is good for spawning.

This log laid across the creek also created a pool. However, the creek washed out the left end (looking upstream) so some of the benefit was lost.

When water starts seeping around something it will continue until it is finished. Frequently this means that man's great plan goes down the tube. Photo by Frank Faha.

Cover logs protect any fish in the pool from predators. ( They would also make a problem for fly anglers. Dapping is about the only way to go. )

Looking upstream it is pretty clear that the cutthroat will be protected from predators, including fly casters. Photo by Frank Faha

All these restoration efforts are intended to improve the environment for the cutthroat. Which means better fishing for all of us. Then we can be successful like Jerry McBride fighting a nice cutthroat in one of his favorite spots on the N. Fork Coeur d'Alene River. Photo by Scott Fink.
